What hints can I give students who are stuck?

Quick tips to pass along to students playing budgeting games.

If students are stuck in Lemonade Tycoon, Finance Summer Camp, Life Scenarios, or Advanced Budgeting, pass along these tips.

1. Re-read what already happened.

Click the back arrow underneath the dialog box. This displays the previous 5 turns, complete with dialog and instructions. The turns cannot be undone, but can still help students know what to do.

2. Do something—anything!

The game responds to wrong moves with hints. For example, try taking $100.00 from Checking. Making this withdrawal at a random point in the game might not be the right move, but if it's wrong, the game will give a hint for the correct action.

3. Read receipts carefully.

Sometimes, the amount on a receipt is designed to throw students off. (This happens in real life, too!) For example, they might receive a bill where with two options: pay now and it will only cost $25, or wait and pay $50 when the bill is due.

4. Ask if it's an income or expense?

If students know money needs to move but can't figure out how, prompt them to ask: is money coming in (income) or going out (an expense)? That answer tells which button to click.
